Brewers (4) @ Pirates (8) 5/22 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Rickie Weeks–Heating up. On base 3 times tonight and homered again.
Bill Hall–Hey, hey. 3 hits tonight, all against lefties and stole a base. Looked ridiculous in his one at-bat against a righty though. So is this another Bill Hall tease or is he really going to turn it around? He’ll have to prove himself in more limited playing time as Ned has decided to use a “soft” platoon where Counsell will be getting more at-bats at third.
Prince Fielder–A couple hits up the middle and opposite. Is this yet another Prince Fielder tease? Also, he committed another error on a terrible throw to third.
Corey Hart–On a homer binge lately. Also walked and stole a base.
Less Filling:
Dave “5 1/3″ Bush–The obligatory 5th Inning Blowup came early tonight as he was tagged for 4 runs in the fourth after being staked to a 1-0 lead. Still came back strong to allow 2 runs in the sixth. It wouldn’t be a Dave Bush outing if he didn’t allow runs in the 5th. I know there are basically no other options on the team, in the minors, or via trade but he needs to get taken out of the rotation ASAP. At no point this year has his ERA been under 6 (6.56 currently). And much like most of the Brewers starters he can’t get deep into games. He’s faced 1 batter in the 7th inning or later this year.
25 Men left on base combined by Brewers hitters and 14 Team Left on Base!! Won’t win many, if any, games like that.
Derrick Turnbow–Yep folks, Turnbow once again appears in the Less Filling column despite not even being on the Major League team. The Crew need to simply cut ties with Derrick Turnbow. He “pitched” once again tonight for Nashville. It was pretty much a blowout already when he came in in the 8th. He goes 2/3 of an inning and allows 4 walks, 1 hit, and 3 runs. His ERA in 6 games pitched at AAA has gone up to 14.54. He’s now walked 15 men in only 4 1/3 innings. I know it would be a salary hit to simply release him, but it needs to be done. You can’t allow that sort of production to continue even in AAA. There’s guys down there fighting to win and to make the show also, and they need to have support to do so.
The Brewers won a road series, and at PNC no less, so I’m giving them a brief respite from any more Less Filling entries.
Brewers (8) vs. Cardinals (3) 5/12 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun–Two more homers today. When Braunie gets like this I am more surprised when he doesn’t hit a home run or at least get a hit than I am when he does. He always makes such good contact with the ball. Even if he fouls it back or pops it up it is always on the sweet spot.
Corey Hart–I think he has probably appeared in the Tastes Great section more than any other player. I just like all the good things he brings to this team, like that 2 out 2 run RBI double last night. That was a key spot as the Cards could have gotten out of that mess with only 1 run scoring.
Dave Bush–Welcome to the positive side of the ledger Bushy. 6 strong innings and a double to boot. Now we just need outings like that on a regular basis.
Less Filling:
The bullpen–once again the guys in the pen made it way more exciting than it should have been. I really like Stetter and he’s been our best reliever all year, but its obviously completely unacceptable to walk 4 guys in that situation. I’ll chalk it up to a fluke.
Prince Fielder–I’m not sure what he is trying to accomplish at the plate. He seems to go up there with little to no plan. He’s just trying to crush every pitch, regardless of situation, count, or location. He’s gotta settle down and really focus on everything back up the middle or the other way.
Derrick Turnbow–That’s right, he made Less Filling despite not even being on the big club. Here’s why: He made his first appearance at AAA Nashville last night, coming into a 2-1 game with the Sounds behind in the 8th inning. His line went 1/3 inning, 1 hit, 3 walks, 1 wild pitch, 2 runs. I don’t think there’s any way he can ever pitch for the Brewers again, and its too bad. He needs a change of scenery to another team.
Brewers (4) vs. Cardinals (3) 5/9 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Hey, hey!!
Tastes Great:
Corey Hart–I know he was only 1 for 4 and left some guys on base, but he produced two huge runs in the fourth inning. First he drove in Ryan Braun with a looper to left and hustled into second for a double. His speed and baserunning ability then allowed him to go to third on a broken bat dribbler to short. This allowed him to score on a wild pitch. His run was produced all by him and his speed and baserunning ability.
Rickie Weeks–Welcome to Tastes Great Rickie. Good to have you aboard. He’s been hitting the ball better lately and came through big-time last night. What a pressure situation and he delivers. Hopefully this sparks a turnaround in him and he gets that average up.
The bullpen–They’ve been much maligned this year because of Turnbow and Gagne’s struggles, but the rest of the guys have been pretty good. Even Riske who started the year struggling is coming around. 4 innings of shutout ball last night by 3 different relievers.
Less Filling:
Bill Hall–Hit it hard a couple times but his average has dipped to .206 now.
Mike Cameron–His average has dipped to .190 and he’s now struck out at least once in 9 straight games. His defense in center has been nothing short of spectacular though.
Manny Parra–I know a lot of people were heaping praise on him for getting out of a bases loaded jam and battling back and continuing to work, but he still only went 5 innings and put himself in some bad situations. His pitch count was better (only 83 pitches in 5 innings, well below his 20 pitches per inning average), but he only threw strikes about half the time. He threw 44 strikes in 83 pitches. Not a recipe for continued or consistent success.
Brewers (5) @ Cubs (19) 4/30 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Ummmm………….everyone gets one mulligan per round right?
The only thing I will say is that Turnbow should never see the field in a Brewers uniform ever again. Trade him for a box of balls, wave him, I don’t care. But he should never pitch again for the Crew.
Brewers (2) vs. Marlins (3) 4/27 (10 innings) — Tastes Great, Less Filling
I’m back after a brief time off for a wedding over the weekend. A great time was had by all, including myelf. Thank you to Michael R. Hemling for filling in and doing a Tastes Great, Less Filling update for Friday’s game.
Tastes Great:
Not much good to talk about in this game. Only 5 hits in 10 innings. Starter can’t get through the 6th inning. Just crappy game kind of.
The team did show some patience and take 8 walks today. Although as inconsistent as they’ve been lately in that department they’ll probably take 1 in the next game.
4 of the 6 relievers did excellent jobs. Riske, Stetter, Mota, and Gagne combined for 3 2/3 innings, 5 strikeouts, only 3 hits with no walks, and most importantly no runs allowed.
A special Atta boy goes to Mitch Stetter. He’s been money all year and came in in a heckuva pickle in the 7th. Bases loaded and no one out. He gets the first two guys to K and a pop out on the last one. I really like how he works.
Rivera did a heckuva job on the steal of home attempt by Ramirez. Blocked the plate well, made a tough pick of the Prince throw, and hung on to make the tag. Good to see our catchers be able to make positive contributions with the bat and the glove this year.
Less Filling:
Ahhh, where to start. How about the suddenly anemic offense. Only 5 hits today in 10 innings (albeit the 8 walks did help) with 20 men left on base. They scored only 6 runs in the 3 game series with Florida and scored only 24 runs in the 7 game homestand. On the year they’ve scored more than 5 runs only 5 times in 25 games.
That lack of punch offenisvely certainly isn’t helped by the large number of dormant bats from key players (Braun, Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Hall, etc.) but it also speaks to the Brewers inability to play small ball or manufacture runs consistently if they aren’t hitting home runs. It’s like they’re set up and Ned coaches them as if they’re an AL team. That approach will not prove consistent as they strikeout too much, walk too little, and just don’t have that big of bats to make it work over the long haul.
Turnbow–yikes. That one game mirage against Philly when he got the save sure feels like a long time ago doesn’t it. He’s gotta be gone soon wouldn’t ya think?
Parra- I know he only gave up two runs today, but he also only was able to make it through 5 1/3 innings again. Now that Bush is getting sent down, it looks like Manny’s gonna stay in the rotation. He needs to be able to manage his pitch count and make it through 6 to 7 innings at least occassionally. Today’s outing is his longest of the year, and that just can’t happen as it taxes the bullpen and leaves your team in a bad spot.
Brewers (5) vs. Phillies (4) 4/23 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Prince Fielder–what more can you say? What a way to break out. He won the game tonight, no doubt.
Mitch Stetter–gotta like this guy. He’s Brian Shouse but ten years younger. I really like him, and think he can be more than just a situational lefty.
Derrick Turnbow–well, well. Never thought he’d show up in this column. His first save in exactly a year. But he did a nice job today. Did what he’s supposed to. Here’s hoping he remains in the top half of this column, not in the bottom.
Trenni Kusnierek–wow, nice sweater puppets tonight. I’m looking forward to warmer weather and fewer threads on her shirts
Welcome back Geoff. A nice welcome and ovation by the fans. A classy guy, and wish him nothing but the best of luck when he’s not playing the Brewers. Made a very nice diving catch tonight…vintage Geoff.
Less Filling:
11 strikeouts–one day after having only 5 in 12 innings. Hamels is certainly a tough pitcher, but if you strike out that much, those offensive slumps like happened today between innings 2 and 8 will occur.
Jason Kendall–had two chances to throw guys out and decent throws get ‘em both times. Unfortunately he missed both. Needs to get those throws on the bag because his arm strength isn’t enough to allow for much leeway.
Rickie Weeks–had a couple plays that were tough defensively, but could and probably should have made. Did make a nice diving stop early in the game to get an out, but missed one before that. Also, on the stolen base in the 9th it was a tough chance but you gotta at least knock that one down.
Ned Yost/Doug Melvin–I heard a few people talking up what a great job Ned did today. Bull. You have to hit for the pitcher in the 6th there, even if you only have a lefty available. And if he could manage a pitching staff in the games earlier this week he wouldn’t have burned up 8 relievers. And that decision to keep 14 pitchers sure hurt us tonight not having a hitter available in needed situations.
Ben Sheets–you’ve done a great job in your 4 starts this year. But having to skip days basically leaves you with a 24 man roster. Gotta be able to depend on your ace.
Official scorer–gave a hit to the guy when Rickie threw it into the ground and Prince couldn’t pick it. That’s the second time in the last few days they made obviously bad decisions to protect the Brewers. Hold ‘em accountable and score it correctly.
Brewers (3) vs. Cardinals (4) 4/21 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Welcome to the first ever edition of Tastes Great, Less Filling. As I laid out in my previous entry this section will highlight the best plays/performances of the game (Tastes Great) and the not so good plays/performances (Less Filling). Here we go.
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun finally had a nice game. Got a couple solid hits to left. The Brewers need him to start swinging a hot stick.
Rickie had a nice shot to left as well. He really need to get going or he will be in danger of losing his starting spot, and potentially getting sent down like last year. He is walking at a decent clip, but batting .178 is just not acceptable.
Jeff Suppan dropped down a gorgeous sac bunt in the 7th.
Less Filling:
Unfortunately a number to choose from.
Another Bill Hall o-fer. I really think the early home runs hurt him because he thinks he’s justified in trying to pull everything instead of using his natural swing and hitting it up the middle or driving pitches to right-center.
Corey Hart–what are ya doing out there man? The drop in right was a somewhat difficult running catch but one that every major league ballplayer should make.
A big Less Filling to the official scorer who gift-wrapped the triple to Hart instead of making the correct call of an error. I understand the ball MAY not have touched Ludwick, but it was a baseball error. But that’s what a hometown scorekeeper can do for you. Makes Corey’s night look better.
Baserunning blunders–two of them today by guys that are usually solid. Gross takes off to third on a ball hit hard at the shortstop? That’s a Little League play. And on the play on Corey from third, either he screwed up big time, or Ned is an idiot and had the “contact play” on where the runner goes no matter what. If that is the case it is the dumbest baseball decision in the book. A sharp one hopper to the third baseman is a sure out at the plate.
Ah, Ned, Ned, Ned. What business do you have getting Gagne up in the 9th when it was tied. That would have been his 5th day in a row!! This guy has a recent history of arm troubles and you’re going to overuse him? You shouldn’t have used him yesterday, and should have told him no way in hell do you go in today. And then you bring Turnbow in in a tie game. You haven’t used him in a crucial situation all year, basically leaving him mop-up duty, which he’s sucked at to the tune of a 9+ ERA. And now you bring him in in a tight situation. I wonder if its any coincidence he and his agent complained to management and to the media just a day before? Ned has no backbone on that one. Catering to a whiny, ineffective baby who has not performed at anywhere near a big league level.
That’s it for the first edition of Tastes Great, Less Filling. Hopefully tomorrow the Tastes Great column is much bigger than the Less Filling column. That would mean a Brewer win. But remember, “Win or Lose, We Will Booze” & “Hey Dunn, nice terd-bailer”
