Brewers (5) @ Diamondbacks (6) 7/3 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
JJ Hardy–What a streak!! Another home run and a couple scorched doubles to go along with a single.
Mike Cameron–Starting to swing the bat better lately. He’s always been a slow starter, and hopefully he’s ready to heat up again.
Parra–Pitched pretty well and obviously should have gotten the win. Once slight complaint though is he managed to get his pitch count up there and had to be pulled after 6 innings. That meant the bullpen needed to be stretched out and we saw what happened.
Gagne, Stetter–Both have had their issues earlier this year, but it was nice to see them both pitch good and hopefully get back on track.
Less Filling:
Mota/Shouse/Torres–I know its kind of something you just gotta chalk up to a once in a million time and move on, but this was a disgusting loss. You have a chance to beat one of the best pitchers in the league, have a winning road trip, and rest your closer. But instead the unthinkable happens. These three combined for face seven hitters and gave up 6 hits, 1 walk, 6 runs, and got NO FRICKIN’ OUTS!!!
Brewers (2) vs. Dodgers (7) 5/15 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun–Very nice to see him sign an extension that ensures he will be a Milwaukee Brewer through the 2015 season. He gave up two free agency years for that security, but got 45 million dollars to show for it. A good deal for the Brewers certainly. Then he comes out today and belts a home run. What a day for the kid. And the Whos in Left Field? man-crush on Braun is ensured for another 7 years!!
Seth McClung–Another nice outing. With the turnover in the bullpen he is moving up into the category of setup guy. Hopefully he can continue the nice work.
Less Filling:
Ben Sheets–Cruising right along until that 7th inning when he gave up 6 hits and 6 runs. Probably could and should have been taken out before it came to all that, but sometimes your ace just can’t carry ya.
Mitch Stetter–Another wild outing led to his demotion. Too bad because since his callup he had been our best reliever in my opinion. Probably deserved it, but I think an example of the coaching and management finding a scapegoat to point the finger at to get the attention off themselves.
The lineup–Only 6 hits, and four of them were after the game was 6-0 in the 8th. Gotta give Ned credit for giving 2/3rd of the .200 Club the day off (Cameron, Hall), but unfortunately their replacements didn’t have anything to offer either. By the way, for all you Tony Gwynn, Jr. fans out there, his batting average fell to .250. I don’t think he’s the answer either, long-term or short-term.
Brewers (8) vs. Cardinals (3) 5/12 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun–Two more homers today. When Braunie gets like this I am more surprised when he doesn’t hit a home run or at least get a hit than I am when he does. He always makes such good contact with the ball. Even if he fouls it back or pops it up it is always on the sweet spot.
Corey Hart–I think he has probably appeared in the Tastes Great section more than any other player. I just like all the good things he brings to this team, like that 2 out 2 run RBI double last night. That was a key spot as the Cards could have gotten out of that mess with only 1 run scoring.
Dave Bush–Welcome to the positive side of the ledger Bushy. 6 strong innings and a double to boot. Now we just need outings like that on a regular basis.
Less Filling:
The bullpen–once again the guys in the pen made it way more exciting than it should have been. I really like Stetter and he’s been our best reliever all year, but its obviously completely unacceptable to walk 4 guys in that situation. I’ll chalk it up to a fluke.
Prince Fielder–I’m not sure what he is trying to accomplish at the plate. He seems to go up there with little to no plan. He’s just trying to crush every pitch, regardless of situation, count, or location. He’s gotta settle down and really focus on everything back up the middle or the other way.
Derrick Turnbow–That’s right, he made Less Filling despite not even being on the big club. Here’s why: He made his first appearance at AAA Nashville last night, coming into a 2-1 game with the Sounds behind in the 8th inning. His line went 1/3 inning, 1 hit, 3 walks, 1 wild pitch, 2 runs. I don’t think there’s any way he can ever pitch for the Brewers again, and its too bad. He needs a change of scenery to another team.
Brewers (2) @ Marlins (7) 5/8 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Ok, I am trying like crazy to be positive still. In fact, in an effort to remain positive, after today I will not be posting a Tastes Great, Less Filling entry until the Brewers get a win. I really think they’ll turn it around this weekend and win 3 of 4.
Tastes Great:
Mitch Stetter–Has been money since getting called up a month or so ago. He’s holding lefties to a .143 batting average………and righties to only a .182 batting average. I really like this young lefty.
Seth McClung–Since changing his windup (he used to bring his glove over his head, now just keeps it in front of his face) he has pitched very well. He’s turned into the long reliever for the Brewers and has allowed only 2 runs in his last 12 innings of work. Needs to cut down on the walks some, but has been doing excellent. If only we didn’t have to use him so much though.
Ned Yost–Ok Ned, you finally made it into the Tastes Great column. He shook the lineup up a bit resting Kendall, Prince, and Hart and moving some guys around. He said it was just a “day off” kind of thing for those guys but hopefully he’ll start making some real changes soon if things continue as they have.
Less Filling:
Carlos Villanueva–Sure he had two hits including one of our two RBI’s, but that’s not his job. His job is to give the Brewers a chance to win the game, and he didn’t today and hasn’t much all year. Like many of our pitchers he ran into trouble in the middle innnings. When he walked Uggla with none on and two outs in the fifth I said and wrote on another message board that that run would score, just like so many two out walks have this year. Sure enough, not only does that one score, but three more are plated before he could get out of it. He, Bush, and Parra have to figure something out or they and the Brewers will be out of it fast.
24 men left on base!!! The Brewers started the year leading the league in batting average with runners in scoring position after the first couple weeks. They’ve now slid down to 6th with a .267 BA. But they are 14th in batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs at .186. That’s right, the Brewers are hitting .186 with runners in scoring position and two outs!!
Mike Cameron–I called it. His average has dropped down to .211 and he’s struck out in every game except the first one against the Cubs. He has 13 K’s in 9 games so far. Still not sold on him hitting second.
Brewers (2) vs. Marlins (3) 4/27 (10 innings) — Tastes Great, Less Filling
I’m back after a brief time off for a wedding over the weekend. A great time was had by all, including myelf. Thank you to Michael R. Hemling for filling in and doing a Tastes Great, Less Filling update for Friday’s game.
Tastes Great:
Not much good to talk about in this game. Only 5 hits in 10 innings. Starter can’t get through the 6th inning. Just crappy game kind of.
The team did show some patience and take 8 walks today. Although as inconsistent as they’ve been lately in that department they’ll probably take 1 in the next game.
4 of the 6 relievers did excellent jobs. Riske, Stetter, Mota, and Gagne combined for 3 2/3 innings, 5 strikeouts, only 3 hits with no walks, and most importantly no runs allowed.
A special Atta boy goes to Mitch Stetter. He’s been money all year and came in in a heckuva pickle in the 7th. Bases loaded and no one out. He gets the first two guys to K and a pop out on the last one. I really like how he works.
Rivera did a heckuva job on the steal of home attempt by Ramirez. Blocked the plate well, made a tough pick of the Prince throw, and hung on to make the tag. Good to see our catchers be able to make positive contributions with the bat and the glove this year.
Less Filling:
Ahhh, where to start. How about the suddenly anemic offense. Only 5 hits today in 10 innings (albeit the 8 walks did help) with 20 men left on base. They scored only 6 runs in the 3 game series with Florida and scored only 24 runs in the 7 game homestand. On the year they’ve scored more than 5 runs only 5 times in 25 games.
That lack of punch offenisvely certainly isn’t helped by the large number of dormant bats from key players (Braun, Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Hall, etc.) but it also speaks to the Brewers inability to play small ball or manufacture runs consistently if they aren’t hitting home runs. It’s like they’re set up and Ned coaches them as if they’re an AL team. That approach will not prove consistent as they strikeout too much, walk too little, and just don’t have that big of bats to make it work over the long haul.
Turnbow–yikes. That one game mirage against Philly when he got the save sure feels like a long time ago doesn’t it. He’s gotta be gone soon wouldn’t ya think?
Parra- I know he only gave up two runs today, but he also only was able to make it through 5 1/3 innings again. Now that Bush is getting sent down, it looks like Manny’s gonna stay in the rotation. He needs to be able to manage his pitch count and make it through 6 to 7 innings at least occassionally. Today’s outing is his longest of the year, and that just can’t happen as it taxes the bullpen and leaves your team in a bad spot.
Brewers (5) vs. Phillies (4) 4/23 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Prince Fielder–what more can you say? What a way to break out. He won the game tonight, no doubt.
Mitch Stetter–gotta like this guy. He’s Brian Shouse but ten years younger. I really like him, and think he can be more than just a situational lefty.
Derrick Turnbow–well, well. Never thought he’d show up in this column. His first save in exactly a year. But he did a nice job today. Did what he’s supposed to. Here’s hoping he remains in the top half of this column, not in the bottom.
Trenni Kusnierek–wow, nice sweater puppets tonight. I’m looking forward to warmer weather and fewer threads on her shirts
Welcome back Geoff. A nice welcome and ovation by the fans. A classy guy, and wish him nothing but the best of luck when he’s not playing the Brewers. Made a very nice diving catch tonight…vintage Geoff.
Less Filling:
11 strikeouts–one day after having only 5 in 12 innings. Hamels is certainly a tough pitcher, but if you strike out that much, those offensive slumps like happened today between innings 2 and 8 will occur.
Jason Kendall–had two chances to throw guys out and decent throws get ‘em both times. Unfortunately he missed both. Needs to get those throws on the bag because his arm strength isn’t enough to allow for much leeway.
Rickie Weeks–had a couple plays that were tough defensively, but could and probably should have made. Did make a nice diving stop early in the game to get an out, but missed one before that. Also, on the stolen base in the 9th it was a tough chance but you gotta at least knock that one down.
Ned Yost/Doug Melvin–I heard a few people talking up what a great job Ned did today. Bull. You have to hit for the pitcher in the 6th there, even if you only have a lefty available. And if he could manage a pitching staff in the games earlier this week he wouldn’t have burned up 8 relievers. And that decision to keep 14 pitchers sure hurt us tonight not having a hitter available in needed situations.
Ben Sheets–you’ve done a great job in your 4 starts this year. But having to skip days basically leaves you with a 24 man roster. Gotta be able to depend on your ace.
Official scorer–gave a hit to the guy when Rickie threw it into the ground and Prince couldn’t pick it. That’s the second time in the last few days they made obviously bad decisions to protect the Brewers. Hold ‘em accountable and score it correctly.
