Brewers (2) vs. Mets (9) 9/3 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

F You Brewers.  No one gets it.  Embarassing.

Less Filling:

Everyone sucked.  Everyone.  F You Brewers.  Way to make a strong showing at home in the middle of a pennant race.  Special mention to Dave Bush for allowing 6 runs in the first inning.  F You Brewers, F You.  I’m done.  Beat the Padres and show some heart doing it.

Brewers (3) @ Pirates (1) 8/29 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Dave Bush–Another solid outing for Bushie.  He’s now lowered his ERA to 4.12 with his strong second half.  I have to admit, I didn’t think he had it in him.

Ryan Braun–Starting to carry the team a bit.  His first inning three-run home run provided the only offense for the Brewers.

Bullpen–It seems like they’re either rock solid or blow up with crooked numbers.  Tonight they were rock solid with Shouse, Gagne, and Torres getting the job done.

Less Filling:

Brewers offense–Thank God for Ryan Braun in this one or it would have been a 4 hit shutout.  The Brewers offense has been madingly inconsistent this year as evidenced by the last three games.  Go off for 12 against the Cards in the first game, then get three early against them the next only to go in a hole, and then do the same thing today.

Prince Fielder–His average has dipped to .268 and despite hitting 6 home runs this month, he hasn’t hit one since August 13th.  He’s been chipping in with RBI’s periodically, but he’s still not on pace for 100 RBI on the year all of his numbers are down considerably from last year.  I didn’t expect another 50 home run season, but this year’s numbers would have been on the low end of what I’d expect.  Also, his defense continues to be attrocious and he committed yet another error last night, his 13th on the year

Brewers (10) vs. Pirates (4) 8/22 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Brewers offense–Woke up from an early slumber in a big way.  Weeks, Hardy, Braun, Hart, and Cameron all had key contributions.  One of the great things to see was the opposite field hits.  Weeks’ triple, J.J.’s home run, and Cameron’s home run all came to the opposite field.  Those three guys are pretty locked in right now.

Ryan Braun–Manufactured a run mostly by himself in the 7th.  Doubled down the line, then stole third on the next pitch.  The Pirates brought the infield in and Fielder hit a smash right at Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez.  Braun started back towards third, then when Sanchez loligagged with the ball and took his time getting it to first, Braun took off for home and made it safely without a throw.  Impressive baserunning.

Dave Bush–Once again gave up early runs, including a two out RBI by the pitcher, and had me wondering if he was reverting back to his old ways.  But he came up big and pounded the strike zone while hitting his spots to make it through 7 innings.

Less Filling:

A 10-4 win….everyone gets a pass.  Go Brewers!

Brewers (4) @ Dodgers (3) 8/16 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

J.J. Hardy–Nearly became a goat after an error in the 9th inning allowed an unearned run to score to tie it up.  But he was the Brewers offense tonight.  His two run home run in the 8th put the Brewers ahead 3-2, and his single in the 10th put them ahead once again.  J.J. had struggled lately, so hopefully he’s turning it around and ready to go on another hot streak.

Dave Bush–Had us worried after giving up a two run home run in the first, but settled down and ended up going 7 strong innings.  Was in line for the win until the blown save in the 9th.  Bush has now lowered his ERA to 4.26.  A far cry from the 5+ he was at in the first half of the year.

Web Gems–There were 6-7 good to excellent defensive plays made by the Brewers in this game.  They included diving catches, leaping catches, double plays turned, runners thrown out, and good stops by the infielders.  The only blemish almost cost them the game though when Hardy blew the grounder in the 9th.  Kapler’s leaping catch into the bleachers in left field was the #1 Web Gem on Baseball Tonight.

Less Filling:

Ned Yost–For the first time since Torres took over the closer role, Yost went with lefty Brian Shouse against a lefty to lead off the 9th inning.  Shouse walked Eithier, so then Torres came in with a runner on base instead of starting the inning clean.  Most closers do not perform as well in that situation.  If Torres is your guy, you run him out there regardless of who is coming up.  Torres made some decent pitches but had some grounders find holes in the defense and holes in J.J.’s glove.  He did also walk one batter.  The players (Shouse, Torres, J.J.) had chances to make plays, but Ned did not put them in the best position to succeed there.

Brian Anderson/Jeff Cirillo–I don’t get why the announcers kept saying this was an instant classic and the best game of the year.  How does a blown save caused by poor managing, walks, and an error equate to a well-played game?  I realize there were some great catches and a couple dramatic hits by Hardy, but we blew chance after chance and tried to blow ‘em some more.  That game was 5-6 great plays (catches in outfield and two hits by Hardy) and a bunch of bad baseball (error, key walks, leaving men on base, outs on the bases, grounding into DP’s, bad managing decisions).  Not what I would call a great game.  Suspenseful yes, but not a well-played game.

Brewers (7) vs. Nationals (1) 8/11 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Dave Bush–Has bounced back nicely in his last two starts after getting beat up pretty good in his first two starts after the Break.  As I said after his last start, all he’s gotta do is keep his ERA between 4.00 and 4.50 the rest of the way and we’ll be happy.

Corey Hart–Played a good overall game.  A couple hits including the go-ahead home run plus a steal.  I was excited when he hit that home run, despite the fact the team I’m playing in one of my fantasy leagues has him on his team.  Always gotta root for the Brewers first!

Less Filling:

Strikeouts–Garrett Mock posted a career-high of 9 strikeouts in only 4 2/3 innings and the Brewers struck out a total of 14 times.  I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I couldn’t tell what kind of stuff the Nats pitchers had, but 14 is too high against anyone.

Brewers (8) @ Reds (1) 8/5 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Dave Bush–All signs pointed to a bad outing.  He doesn’t pitch well on the road, gets beat up by Cincinatti, and in that bandbox of a ballpark his pitches up could get hammered.  But Bush managed to fenagle his way out of a jam in the first and cruised pretty easily from there.  His season ERA is back to 4.50.  If he can keep it in that 4.25 to 4.65 area for the season it will be a huge boost for the back end of our rotation.

Prince Fielder–Gotta give him credit for manning up and addressing the dugout dust-up yesterday.  He said most of the right things, and I did gain back some of the respect I lost for him.  He proceeded to take his frustration out on the opposition with a tape measure blast.

JJ Hardy–Broke an 0 for 28 slump with a douple hits.  Good to see him get back on track.

Ryan Braun–Picked up his 16th three hit game, which leads the National League.

Corey Hart–Picked up a couple big early extra base hits with runners in scoring position that gave them some early momentum.

Jason Kendall–Actually drove the ball to left-center for an extra base hit.  I can’t remember the last time we saw that.  Also picked up a late RBI on a base hit to right.  Still needs a day off though.

Less Filling:

A pretty well rounded game by the Brewers, so no one finds themselves here.

Brewers (6) vs. Astros (4) 7/26 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Ray Durham–Welcome to Milwaukee Ray Ray.  A couple doubles, a walk, 3 runs scored.

Ryan Braun–Stud!  Only went 1 for 2 but had a couple sacrifice flies and then of course the big fly in the 7th to tie it up.

Corey Hart–Awoke from his week long slumber to finally do something positive for the team.  Doubled in the 8th to set-up the winning run.

Bill Hall–Had a nice approach trying to hit the ball the other way to move the runner over, and managed to get a hit to score the winning run.  Later scored to give the Brewers an insurance run.

Less Filling:

Dave Bush–Coming off multiple quality outings in a row, wasn’t nearly as sharp.  Credit Ned Yost some for screwing him up with this whole “pitching platoon”.

Brewers (11) vs. Rockies (1) 7/10 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Dave Bush–I’ve been hard on him this year, but he’s really gotten the job done in the last 4-6 weeks.  Hopefully he can hold this form and be an asset to the team instead of a liability.

Brewers offense–Outta nowhere comes 12 hits and 11 runs.

2 out RBI–10 of the 11 runs came via 2 out RBI.  Quite a departure from what the Brewers usually do.

Less Filling:

Mike Rivera–Was the only regular without a hit.  Also allowed the Rockies to run roughshod on the bases.  3 steals plus a bad throw allowed an advance.

Brewers defense–Two errors today and that total has been increasing lately.  Gotta get it shored up for the pennant push.

Brewers (2) vs. Pirates (1) 7/5 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

Dave Bush–I’ve been very hard on Bushie this year, and he certainly has deserved it.  However, in his last 6-8 starts or so he’s really performed pretty well.  I’m not ready to say I’m completely comfortable when he pitches, but at least he’s improving.

Mike Cameron–His shot early staked the Brewers to a lead.

Prince Fielder–He had to feel insulted when the Pirates intentionally walked Braun to pitch to him.  And he delivered with the game-winning hit.

Eric Gagne–So far, so good in his first two outings.

JJ Hardy–He’s been hammering the ball latey.  But today he showed where his priorities lie.  He came in with a 16 game hitting streak and had an opportunity to extend it in the 9th.  Instead he followed orders and dropped down a sacrifice bunt to set up the winning run.  He was appropriately acknowledged with a nice ovation by the crowd.

Less Filling:

Certainly would have liked to see some more offense, but gotta be happy with the end result.

Brewers (3) @ Diamondbacks (6) 6/30 — Tastes Great, Less Filling

Tastes Great:

JJ Hardy–3 hits yesterday, including two doubles.  Unfortunately no one behind him could do anything except Fielder’s RBI single.

Less Filling:

Offense–It’s been downright offensive lately.  Haven’t scored after the 6th inning in over a week.  1 for 10 with runners in scoring position last night.  Braun is 0 for his last 12 or something like that and chasing every pitch thrown his way.

Dave Bush–Ah…back to reality.  It was nice to dream and think he could be a solid pitcher after those last two starts, but then its back to the status quo antebellum.  Giving up hard hit balls, two out RBI’s, and key walks.

The road trip–Started out pretty solid after taking 2 of 3 at Atlanta.  But they’ve lost 3 of 4 since then and never hit well against Randy Johnson who they face tonight.  If they lose tonight as I’d expect they’d have to win the last two games of the series to salvage a series and road trip split.
