Brewers (4) vs Rockies (5) 6/11 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun–Despite striking out in one of the biggest at-bats of the game, he redeemed himself by pulling the Brewers within 1 with his three-run shot in the ninth. Also had a couple hits earlier in the game.
Prince Fielder–He and Braun are going to get worn out having to carry this team offensively like they are. Fielder was on three times as well.
Mitch Stetter–Continues to do his job and do it well. In this mini-slump the team is on, the bullpen has struggled quite a bit, but he has been one of the few strong spots.
Less Filling:
Yovanni Gallardo–If five innings and two runs is his “bad” outing, we certainly can live with that. With that said, going just five innings wasn’t what they needed out of their ace today. Gotta be a little concerned with some high walk totals lately too. He’s walked 4 or more in four of his last six starts.
Carlos Villanueva–That’s two outings in a row that he’s allowed a crooked number. He had been cruising heading into the third outing versus Atlanta, and Macha’s decision to throw him that third day in a row against the same team seems to have thrown him off.
Mat Gamel–I really think he’s about to break loose. Of course 9 strikeouts in his last 13 at-bats doesn’t give too much confidence. An error today was his first in a while, but still not a good sign for someone with as poor of a fielding history as he has.
Brewers offense–It’s pretty sad when four runs seems like a lot. And sad when you only score 8 runs in three games against the all-world Colorado Rockies pitching staff. But it’s not all that surprising to this observer, as the holes in the lineup are the same as they were last year, except they’ve gotten bigger with the injury to Weeks and downward spiral of Kenall, Hart, and Hall. Add in a sub-par start to the season for J.J. and Cameron seemingly on one of his cold streaks, and it’s a recipe for a bad offense.
Brewers defense–Two errors that were charged, and a few other misplays that cost outs and runs.
Special Mention: Bill Hall–Billy has requested and been granted a permanent place in Less Filling. He struck out agian today in his only at-bat as a pinch-hitter, and his average will be down below .200 in the next week or so (if he keeps getting playing time). While Rickie Weeks and Mike Cameron graduated from the .200 Club last year, Bill just loved his time there too much and wants to stay. Here are some mind-boggling stats about Billy:
-Since April 28, he has 23 starts and only one multi-hit game.
-Now 1 for 17 in June
-Is 10 for 83 since May 1 for a .120 batting average; he has 31 strikeouts to go with those ten hits
-His OPS in June is .229
-Since May 1 he has 90 plate appearances and only scored 7 runs
-His batting average has been lower or unchaged after the game than it was when the game started in 30 of his last 33 games.
Brewers (7) @ Pirates (2) 5/20 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
.200 Club–Wha, What? That’s right folks, all three members of the .200 Club had at least two hits. Cam and Rickie seem to be really coming around. Billy had a bullet into right-center for a double; that is the hit that made him in 05 and 06. Maybe he can get that form back now.
Ryan Braun–Nuff said.
Corey Hart–Mainstay; home run the other way.
JJ Hardy–2 hits and a walk. He seems to be coming around as well.
Manny Parra–Nice outing as he did not give up a run. My enthusiasm is tempered by his high pitch count and inability to finish the 6th. Going deep into the count on hitter after hitter is a recipe for disaster.
Less Filling:
Prince Fielder–0 for 5. People raved about his leadership last year, and it was easy when the team was winning. Its not so easy to lead when your team is struggling. Haven’t seen that out of him this year on the field with his play or off the field.
Eric Gagne–4 runners allowed in 2/3 inning. Left due to injury before he could finish. We’ll have to see how serious the injury is still.
Brewers (2) vs. Dodgers (7) 5/15 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
Tastes Great:
Ryan Braun–Very nice to see him sign an extension that ensures he will be a Milwaukee Brewer through the 2015 season. He gave up two free agency years for that security, but got 45 million dollars to show for it. A good deal for the Brewers certainly. Then he comes out today and belts a home run. What a day for the kid. And the Whos in Left Field? man-crush on Braun is ensured for another 7 years!!
Seth McClung–Another nice outing. With the turnover in the bullpen he is moving up into the category of setup guy. Hopefully he can continue the nice work.
Less Filling:
Ben Sheets–Cruising right along until that 7th inning when he gave up 6 hits and 6 runs. Probably could and should have been taken out before it came to all that, but sometimes your ace just can’t carry ya.
Mitch Stetter–Another wild outing led to his demotion. Too bad because since his callup he had been our best reliever in my opinion. Probably deserved it, but I think an example of the coaching and management finding a scapegoat to point the finger at to get the attention off themselves.
The lineup–Only 6 hits, and four of them were after the game was 6-0 in the 8th. Gotta give Ned credit for giving 2/3rd of the .200 Club the day off (Cameron, Hall), but unfortunately their replacements didn’t have anything to offer either. By the way, for all you Tony Gwynn, Jr. fans out there, his batting average fell to .250. I don’t think he’s the answer either, long-term or short-term.
Brewers (4) vs. Dodgers (6) 5/14 — Tastes Great, Less Filling
*Sigh* Yet another frustrating game. A pretty familiar storyline from last year though: Score some runs early in the game, get a quality start from your starter, fail to add tack-on runs, reliever blows it. This time though you add in a dash of poor defense.
Tastes Great:
Manny Parra–Finally a quality start from Manny. Should have gotten the win today without a doubt. Also helped himself at the plate with a couple RBI’s. Just like with Carlos and Bush though, we need this kind of effort and production on a somewhat consistent basis.
Corey Hart–Ho hum, two more hits, another steal.
Less Filling:
Prince Fielder–His defensive lapses and deficiencies will hurt this club. Its not only that he can’t field, but he has a hard time picking the ball, and just doesn’t have a good feel around the base. Add in the fact he’s 5’10” and now he can’t reach many balls either.
Guillermo Mota–Simply didn’t get the job done. I like him fine as a setup type guy, but would never trust him in the closer role. Shoulda saved Torres for the 9th if you ask me.
.200 Club–After threatening to disband with a couple hits in the last game, they go right back to their ways. Rickie got the day off, but Cameron and Hall combined to go 0 for 8 with 6 strikeouts. Hall needs to be pulled from the lineup and quick. Unfortunately Counsell is not a serviceable option as an everyday player. Mat Gamel is raking in AA, but he’s not ready yet. Not sure what to do there. The Dodgers have a number of good third base prospects (Blake DeWitt, Andy LaRoche), but it would probably take a lot to get one of those guys.
